Feeding hatchling praying mantids

What do hatchling mantids eat?

The staple diet that is most widely used for feeding hatchling mantids, is fruit flies. These are readily available in the hobby, and are offered in pet shops, and online. The 2 main species available are Drosophila Melanogaster and Drosophila Heidi.

The D. Heidi are the larger of the 2, and the D. Melanogaster the smaller. Some hatchling will be to small to readily take D. Heidi, such as the Odontomantis, which are minute as hatchling.

Species such as Hierodula and Sphodromantis will readily take micro crickets. Again, these are available online and in pet shops. However, these should be fed sparingly, as if the encluse is overcrowded with crickets, it can led to the mantis hatchlings being lunch.
